18 month old baby found in collapsed building rubble in Kenya

An 18-month-old baby has been rescued alive in Kenya from the rubble of the six-storey building which collapsed four days ago. The baby girl, who was reportedly found wrapped and put in a bucket was without injuries and has been referred to Kenyatta National Hospital.

Speaking about the incident, the Nairobi police chief, Japheth Koome, called it a ‘miracle’ and said the emergency services were continuing their rescue efforts. He further stated that the death toll from the tragedy rose to 23 on Tuesday after two more bodies were found by the rescuers.

The building located at Huruma neighbourhood which was built near a river just two years ago, had been slated for demolition after being declared structurally unsound. However, an evacuation order for the structure, which was built near a river just two years ago, was ignored.

Five people are to appear in court on Tuesday to face manslaughter charges over the incident.
