Soldiers declare war on Niger Delta militants

The Nigerian army caused panic in the Arepo area of Ogun state and some part of Lagos state as soldiers bombarded the base of suspected Niger Delta militants in the state. The Punch reports that scores of militants were feared killed in the joint army operation which lasted for several hours. The source revealed that the army attacked Fatola, the base of the militants, continuing that houses around the area were shaken by the impact of bomb blasts on the Ijaw militants. He said: “There has been a lot of commotion. The Nigerian Air Force bombarded Fatola, in Arepo, which is the base of the militants. They are shelling the place with fighter jets. Some soldiers also surrounded the area to make sure that if any of the militants should run out, they would be gunned down.” A local said people in the area had commenced fleeing their homes due to the operation. LAGOS: Gun duel as militants face military personnel

Residents of Totowu, a riverine community in Ishuti area of Igando in Lagos have continued to flee the area following the invasion, abductions and reckless killings by suspected Niger Delta militants. A fresh attack was said to have occurred in the area, yesterday, leading to a gun duel between suspected Niger Delta militants and the military team deployed to the area. Two yet to be identified persons were abducted by militants. A member of the military team who preferred anonymity for security reasons, confirmed the attack, saying the militants came through one of the river terminals at about 7 am. The gun battle was said to have lasted several hours.

Barring any last minute change in plans, truck owners would suspend transportation of petroleum products across the country, beginning from today. The truck owners had last week, issued a seven-day ultimatum within which to withdraw their services over alleged unpaid bridging claims and reduction of freight rate paid to its members by the Petroleum Equalisation Fund, PEF. NNPC to speed up oil exploration in the North on the President's order

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, to increase the tempo on crude oil exploration activities in the northern part of the country. Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr. Maikanti Baru, who disclosed this, yesterday, when governor of Bauchi State, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja, also lamented that Nigeria was currently facing difficult times. Baru said the NNPC currently had exploration activities going on in the frontier basin in Chad and also in some areas close to the Kolmani River, located in Bauchi State, where Shell had made some indicative discovery of hydrocarbons. According to him, the President has directed the NNPC to go into that area to improve and further explore the magnitude and prospect of those finds.
