57 remanded in Niger prison over illegal arms

A Chief Magistrates’ court in Minna, Niger State, on Friday ordered the remand in prison of 57 suspects arrested in Kpaidna and surrounding villages during an invasion of the community by the Nigerian Army to seize hidden illegal arms. The Deputy Chief Registrar of the court, Ahmed Bima, who gave the order when the suspects were arraigned, also adjourned to September 6 further mention in the case. The accused were arraigned on a four-count charge of culpable homicide, causing mischief, being in possession of dangerous weapons and obstructing officers from their lawful duties, contrary to various sections of the penal code. Bima also directed that those injured among the suspects should be given medical treatment. Last week’s attack on Kpaidna and four other villages had left over 19 people dead, including 12 soldiers. The Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan, on Friday dissolved a four-year-old marriage between Musa Busari and his wife, Kafilat over issues of missing placenta and irresponsibility. President of the court, Mr Ademola Odunade, held that there was little or nothing the court could do on the matter as evidence had shown that the couple had agreed to part ways over irreconcilable differences. Dissolving the marriage, therefore, Odunade ordered that the man should be giving N3,000 as monthly feeding allowance for each of the two children produced by the union. He directed that Kafilat should have the custody of the twin children “because they are still legal minor while Busari should be responsible for their education, health and other forms of welfare’’. Man attempts suicide after shooting ex-wife

A man on Friday at a shopping complex in Zaragoza, Spain, shot his ex-wife and then tried to commit suicide, investigators have said. According to witnesses, the incident occurred around 11am. Police sources in Aragon believed the man might have been waiting in a black Land Rover for his former wife and daughter to leave a car park near the shopping complex, and opened fire on them as they appeared. According to El Heraldo, the daughter, who was driving the vehicle, was not hit by any of the shots but the mother. The man was then said to have shot himself. The mother and the man are said to be in a critical condition in the hospital. Police say it appears it is a case of domestic violence, as the aggressor and the victim had recently separated.

Schoolboy gets stabbed to death in Lagos

A birthday party on Kehinde Street in the Ajegunle area of Lagos State turned bloody when some guests began a fight and stabbed a schoolboy, Endurance Augustine, to death. Policemen from the Ajeromi division were said to have removed Endurance’s corpse and deposited it in a morgue. Information learnt was that the boy had gone to the party with some of his friends, when a fight broke out. A resident said that the cause of the fight was unknown, adding that the hoodlums, who were guests at the party, fled after stabbing the victim to death. It was gathered that two suspects, who were trying to hide the victim’s corpse, were apprehended by residents and handed over to the police. The boy's mother, who did not want her name in print, said she had gone to a church service at 4pm on Wednesday only to hear the news of her son’s death on her return. NATIONAL DIRECTORATE OF EMPLOYMENT PREDICTS RISE IN CRIME AND PROSTITUTION IN NIGERIA

The National Directorate of Employment has predicted an imminent rise in kidnapping, robbery, prostitution and youth restiveness in the country. Consequently, it has empowered 638 youths in Anambra state by cash and training. The Director-General of the agency, Mr Olakunle Obayan posited the rise in social vices among the youth on Monday at the opening ceremony of the “Start Your Own Business” training of the directorate held in Awka, the Anambra state capital. No fewer than 150 youths were being trained under Vocational Skills Development in the state. 120 students in the junior secondary school were being trained in various skills as holiday programme, including bead making, interlocking block moulding, manicure and pedicure, catering and satellite installation. 50 senior secondary school graduates would receive training under SYOB, whereas 318 beneficiaries received N20,000 each under the Artisan Resettlement and Mentoring Scheme. 49yr old farmer arraigned for selling 7 children for N400k

A 49-year-old farmer, Gabriel Ajor has been arraigned before a Lokoja Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly abducting and selling seven children including his two sons and an eight-year-old baby for N400,000. Ajor was alleged to have abducted and sold the children under the pretext of sending them to schools in Owerri and United States of Americal. On arraignment at the Lokoja Chief Magistrate’s Court II on Monday, the accused was said to have tricked one Kenneth Omale and John Attah, parents of five of the children, into believing he meant well. According to the prosecuting police officer, Cornet Ayabatu (ASP), the accused of Nwajala in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi, between March and June, criminally conspired with others now at large to commit the offence.
