Resident doctors proceed on indefinite strike in Ogun state

Members of the Association of Resident Doctors of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, have commenced an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the skipping of Consolidated Medical Salary Scale for medical doctors by the hospital management.

A press release, signed by association’s President, Dr Walter Nzeakah, General Secretary, Dr Sewanu Awhangansi and Public Relations Officer, Dr Mojisola Adeniji, said that with the non-implementation the doctors were only getting a fraction of their salary.

The doctors said the industrial action follows a resolution by the National Association of Resident Doctors at a recent National Executive Council. The NARD had mandated ARD chapters where members were not paid full salaries by the end July 2016 to withdrew their services.

They also stated that the directive for management of public health institutions to pay the CONMESS was issued by the federal government in December 2013, and became effective since 2014.

They said that their colleagues in Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos and the University College Hospital, Ibadan, had started receiving their full CONMESS.

The statement read in part, “Skipping of Consolidated Medical Salary Scale of level 2, for all medical doctors took effect from January 2014. The circular was released in December 2013.

“With the circular, resident doctors and medical officers are expected to skip CONMESS Level 2. With that skipping, they will be getting appropriate salary.

“But the skipping has not been effected by management of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, who has refused to pay us full salary.

“As a result we are being underpaid, while other members of staff have enjoyed the skipping and are enjoying full salary.

“This was what necessitated the industrial action, we embarked on since Monday August 1st.”

Efforts made by our correspondent to speak with the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Akinwande Akinhanmi, proved abortive, as he neither pick ‎the calls made to his telephone nor reply to the text message sent to his line, on the matter.
