Sultan of Sokoto makes move to end Fulani herdsmen clash with farmers a


In a bid to end the violence that results from clashes between herdsmen and farmers, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar has met with the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).

The meeting was held on Monday, May 16 in Abuja and Daily Trust reports that a communiqué signed by Baba Othman Ngelzarma who is the national secretary of MACBAN noted that top on the agenda were the challenges facing the pastoralists and herders, especially the incessant clashes with farmers and the growing discontent against Fulani herdsmen.

Seven committees were raised to deliberate further on finding a lasting solution to the crises.

The Sultan was made the chairman of the committees and coordinators were appointed to report back to him directly on their progress and challenges.

include the committees on internal governance and funding, politics, dialogue and community relations, grazing reserves and pastoralism, international crisis and networking, media and public relations,  security, law enforcement and government relations and the committee on education, ethics and values, the communiqué said.
Coordinators were appointed to chair the committees and report to the concerned elders under the chairmanship of the sultan.

The committees are: the committees on internal governance and funding, politics, dialogue and community relations, grazing reserves and pastoralism, international crisis and networking, media and public relations, security, law enforcement and government relations and the committee on education, ethics and values.

Ardo Muhammadu Kirowa who is the national president of MACBAN commended the Oyo state government for its decision to provide grazing routes to herdsmen and also urging the people not to poison their waters.


He called for restrain in the handling of crisis between herdsmen and farmers.

Kirowa also warned herders against encroachment on farmlands, night grazing and allowing minors to engage in grazing. He also urged other state governments to emulate Oyo and Plateau State.
