Court says 'NO' to exorbitant electricity bills in Nigeria

Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) yesterday described the judgement reversing electricity tariff in the country, which became operational on February 1, as a setback to the electricity sector, saying it will appeal the judgement. “We will challenge this decision. We have instructed our lawyer to appeal. Consequently, the Commission has filed for stay of execution and a notice of appeal of the judgement,” NERC stated. Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, the Acting Chairman of NERC, Dr. Anthony Akah, said though the Commission respects the judgment, “but we are dissatisfied because it represents the reversal of the commercial foundation upon which contracts for gas, hydro, coal and solar feedstock for the production of electricity have been predicated.” According to him, the ultimate destination of a commercialised electricity market is to achieve stability and adequacy in the supply of electricity to satisfy the yearning of Nigerians for adequate, safe and reli

PANIC IN LAGOS AS LAND GRABBERS CLASH

There was panic in Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos , yesterday, following a clash between hoodlums suspected to be  land grabbers. Saturday Vanguard gathered that the hoodlums who were armed with dangerous weapons stormed 5th Avenue Festac Town to lay claim to a parcel of land which had been under dispute but met another armed hoodlums. During the ensuing gun battle ,some  residents who were unsure of what was going on, concluded it was a bank robbery, following their assumption that it was the same location where armed robbery took place  which  led to the death of a nursing mother and her baby, few months ago. Consequently, text messages were sent to loved ones to avoid the entire Festac Town, that robbers were attacking some banks around 4th Avenue and that several persons were killed by stray  bullets. Osinbajo spites militants to rage

Three militant groups – Niger Delta Volunteers, Niger Delta Peoples Liberation Movement, and Bakassi Freedom Fighters – have criticised Vice President Yemi Osinbajo saying that militants were fighting for their pockets. Osinbajo had reportedly accused the militants of being partly responsible for the economic woes of the country, while delivering a lecture at Elizade University in Ondo State. The militant groups, however, said instead of ridiculing them, the vice president should have advised President Muhammadu Buhari to address the injustice in the Niger Delta. They made their grievances known in a statement signed by their spokespersons – Ekpo Ekpo for NDV; Henry Etete for NDPLF and Asukwo Henshaw for BFF.
